Smiley Comes Home:
The Lives of Colin Petersen

24 November 2018 – 17 February 2019

Developed by the Moreton Bay Regional Council Museum Network and Redcliffe Museum, Smiley comes home: The lives of Colin Petersen featured a private collection of memorabilia, including photographs, awards, clothing and more, from this ex-Bee Gee and international actor.

Our role was to design the exhibition branding and graphics that captured the essence of Petersen and his incredible life.

More than a (wo)man

The exhibition was divided into two main sections: the first focused on Petersen’s childhood as an actor, particularly his role in Smiley; and the second looked at his career with the Bee Gees. We needed to ensure our design told the two distinct stories of each period, while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic that linked the two halves.

How deep is your love

We decided on a colour palette of mostly yellow and red drawn straight from popular designs of each period — with slight variations to highlight the distinction between the two. In the first section, dedicated to Petersen’s childhood, we used yellow as the primary colour, weaving a childlike quality through the design. The typography echoed the style of 1950s posters — like those for Petersen’s films — using a whimsical script, a loosely drawn block sans and a slab serif.

In the second, the main colour switched to red to reflect a bolder, adult rock n roll vibe. We changed the typography to be more representative of the 1970s, with expanded and compressed sans. This contrast between the two eras also played out over the didactic panels and texture variations.
